Have Some Eggs

While our mythical year of fabulousness has entered its second quarter we are preparing ourselves for the celebration of new life. According to Christian teachings Jesus Christ had been crucified a couple millennia ago and resurrected on the second day after his execution. Appearing to several people Jesus ascends to heaven 40 days later to take his thrown in the Kingdom of God. Easter is determined as the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox and its date can therefore vary from the fourth week of March until the end of April. Easter corresponds with the Jewish festival of Pesach or Passover when Jews celebrate the Exodus of the ancient Israelites out of Egypt after they have been freed from slavery. To help sell the Christian faith to the pagans of Europe Christian festivals where incorporated with already existing celebrations. Therefore the most important festival of the Christian calendar roughly corresponds with the pagan festivals of the Spring Equinox or Ostara and Beltane, the latter being celebrated on the first of May.

When asking the average person on the street about Easter, they will probably talk of Easter eggs and the Easter bunny and might not be aware of the religious meaning and significance of Easter. Easter has become more of a cultural festival rather than a religious one and commercial life has jumped on the bandwagon quite some time ago. Easter is to become the new Christmas. I hope that despite the commercialisation Easter will keep its upbeat-spring-like-new-life vibe. We’re not to enjoy -or to suffer- the freak temperatures of Easter last year but the sun is out. And while I’m still riding my fabulousness train I’ve hit some hilly terrain, yet I am full of faith that the journey through the rolling hills will eventually lead me to the promised land. Whatever train you’re riding and whether you are celebrating, the coming of Spring, the resurrection of your saviour, the freeing of your people from slavery or just another bank holiday, I wish you marvellous beginnings.
