UK politics sure hasn’t been boring lately. I can’t say it has been very entertaining though, as the freak show that is Boris Johnson’s government is becoming increasingly cringeworthy. A recently appointed special adviser to the Prime Minister caused an uproar that echoed across the political divide, due to his advocacy of eugenics. Let me explain how Boris’ shit show got to this point.
How Power Corrupts
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadshow is directed by a Svengali type evil genius called Dominic Cummings who has been credited with Boris’ landslide victory amongst several other unpleasant events. Cummings, as Chief Special Adviser to the Prime Minister, is running the show like a true dictator getting rid of anyone in government he doesn’t like, including aides of other government departments, cabinet ministers and veteran politicians. He doesn’t have the authority to sack all these people, but as Boris doesn’t object, what Cummings wants, goes. He has also barred journalists of news organisations critical of the government from press conferences, which really shouldn’t be happening in a so-called liberal democracy. It is no secret that Cummings wants to restructure the civil service and in an attempt to do so, he made a call for ‘misfits and weirdos’ to apply for advisory positions in government. One of those ‘weirdos’ who applied and was appointed recently as a special adviser to the Prime Minister is Andrew Sabisky and this young man has been expressing some controversial views.
The Issue with Andrew Sabisky and Eugenics
Sabisky has stated in several blog posts and comments on a couple of Cummings’ blog posts in 2014 and 2015 that on average black Americans are considerably less intelligent than their white counterparts. For that reason, black yanks are far more likely to suffer from an ‘intellectual disability’. Lawmakers should therefore take the ”very real racial differences in intelligence” into account. Sabisky also believes that benefit claimants should be discouraged from having a lot of children as they are “less conscientious and agreeable than the general population”. To take it a step further, he calls for compulsory contraception for certain people to prevent the creation of a ‘permanent underclass’. He argues that intelligence is mainly inherited and that it “correlates with better outcomes: physical health [higher] income and lower mental illness”. While politicians across the political spectrum were appalled by Sabisky’s views, the Prime Minister by means of his spokesperson refused to distance himself from Sabisky’s controversial utterings. Although ‘Boris doesn’t seem to have any problems with his views, Sabisky decided to resign as not to be a distraction.
Eugenics is a highly controversial topic and the concept has been around since ancient Greek times. It became quite popular in the 1800s and was introduced as a bonafide academic discipline at the beginning of the 20th century. It took a Nazi party, a World War and the likes of Dr. Mengele for the world to acknowledge that eugenics is rather repulsive. Eugenics has been considered a morally unacceptable pseudoscience since the years after the Second Wolrd War. However, there have been forced sterilisation programmes across the world including the US and the ideology still has many supporters. Race science, or scientific racism, is not only morally abhorrent, it also doesn’t acknowledge that there are different forms of intelligence. Even if IQ were the only form of intelligence, an individual with a high IQ is not automatically a better person. There are quite a lot of psychopathic bastards out there that are considered very clever, yet they don’t do the world a lot of good. On a less malicious level, many high-IQ individuals are social or emotional cripples.
Freedom of Speech and a Government for the Few
As an anarcha-libertarian, I am an advocate of free speech. As long as you don’t incite hatred, which I agree is a fine line, you should be able to say whatever you want, even if it’s controversial or I think it is utter bollocks. It is a different matter however, when controversial and excluding views are held by government leaders and their appointed advisers. If you believe in the fallacy that is democracy, then a democratic government is voted into power by the people, and it should serve all people, including those who didn’t vote for it. But since democracy is a misconception, this is not quite how shit goes down and Boris’ government makes that rather clear. Boris won the general elections last December by a landslide, which means many of those benefit claimants and members of the underclass voted for him. In addition to contempt for voters, it is likely that Sabisky got hired not in spite of his views but because of them. So not only does the country have a highly incompetent and opportunistic Prime Minister, whose most senior adviser rules the political show like a true dictator, he is also totally cool with hiring people who are supportive of eugenics shaping public policy. That is not something to just be appalled or outraged by; it is very, very worrying.
Ditching the Show
All these elements make it more evident that politics is not just a rather entertaining soap opera advocates of liberal democracy and so-called well-informed people take rather seriously. It is a horror show that keeps people bound to illegitimate authority. The current display of dictatorial tendencies and class and race supremacy within the UK government might not even be the most worrying issue. What might be the true travesty is that this shit show called democracy is still on telly and we haven’t en masse got rid of the box yet.
